BERNAL HEIGHTS, SAN FRANCISCO — Neighbors are invited to remember loved ones and celebrate Día de los Muertos during a community event outside the Bernal Heights Branch Library on Sunday, November 1, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Community altar and music
According to the San Francisco Public Library’s official event listing, local artist and activist Calixto Robles will guide creation of a community altar. René y Familia, the multigenerational musical family also known as La Familia Peña-Govea, will perform live music incorporating bilingual folk traditions.
Participants are invited to contribute small items of remembrance, including flowers, photographs, notes, sealed food or drink, and keepsakes. These offerings are part of a tradition of honoring people who have died; the event should not be confused with Halloween trick-or-treating.
Where to meet
The event is associated with Bernal Heights Branch Library at 500 Cortland Avenue and is scheduled outside on the Moultrie Street side of the building. The library identifies the gathering as suitable for all ages.
Anyone bringing an item to the altar should follow directions from event organizers and be considerate of people who are remembering a recent loss. The event listing does not guarantee individual performances at a precise time within the two-hour window.
Check for any changes
For questions or accessibility arrangements, contact the branch at 415-355-2810 or consult the event page. Outdoor gatherings can change if circumstances require.
