BERNAL HEIGHTS, SAN FRANCISCO — As the first anniversary of the Bernal Heights Playground reopening approaches on November 3, families can revisit how a significant accessibility renovation changed the neighborhood play space.
What was completed in 2025
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s project record confirms the playground at 500 Moultrie Street reopened to the public on November 3, 2025. The project replaced worn-out playground equipment and surfaces, improved drainage and grading, and refreshed adjacent asphalt routes to make the area more accessible.
Rec and Park described the renovation as a $1.3 million project completed under a newer Playground Renewal Program that streamlines the delivery of replacement play structures.
Accessibility was a central objective
Replacing outdated materials with accessible, fall-attenuating surfaces was a major part of the work. The department said the design incorporated community feedback and modern accessibility requirements rather than simply reinstalling the former playground.
The renovation was completed in 2025. This anniversary article is not an announcement of new 2026 construction, and families should not expect a new ribbon-cutting event unless the city separately announces one.
How to plan an outing
Nearby Bernal Heights Recreation Center offers public recreation facilities. For people planning a group visit, the city’s picnic reservation page explains available reservable tables, approved uses and limits. It lists reservations for certain picnic areas in 9 a.m.–1 p.m. or 2–6 p.m. blocks and a posted capacity of 50.
Because reservations and individual amenities may be affected by maintenance or special events, verify current availability before making group plans.
